Note: Creating custom error pages when FrontPage Extensions are on is not recommended. FrontPage uses the .htaccess file for the Publish Web feature. If you overwrite the .htaccess file you will no longer be able to Publish your web.

Creating the error pages

  1. Using your standard html editor navigate to you local web site root.
  2. Create the directory called "errors" and enter this directory.
  3. Using your standard html editor create the following files and save them to your newly create "errors" directory:

    error400.html
    error401.html
    error403.html
    error404.html
    error500.html

Creating the .htaccess file

  1. Open Notepad (or equivalent software depending on your OS) and paste in the following:

    ErrorDocument 400 /errors/error400.html
    ErrorDocument 401 /errors/error401.html
    ErrorDocument 403 /errors/error403.html
    ErrorDocument 404 /errors/error404.html
    ErrorDocument 500 /errors/error500.html

  • Save the file as .htaccess (do NOT save as .htaccess.txt). Uploading the error pages and .htaccess file.

    1. Using an FTP Client connect to your site and move to the /public_html folder.
    2. Upload the "errors" directory, which should also upload error pages inside.
    3. Upload the .htaccess file (the .htaccess file will disappear once uploaded to the server, this is normal).

The changes should be instant and from now on whenever any visitor experiences an error they will be directed to your custom error pages.
